It’s tempting to call this blog an ode to the almighty avocado. The symbol of healthy fat. The fruit (it’s a fruit right? it has a seed – I’m still confused on the rules) that allowed Americans to embrace (love) healthy fats.
YAS QUEEN – go ahead. Eat that avocado – it’s good for you!
The delicious, beautifully green, exciting when it’s perfect (really, is there anything better than cutting in to a perfectly ripe avocado) creamy food that helped usher us away from the low-fat diet craze. With science that taught us that low-fat diets may be adding to obesity in the country, that low-fat foods were supplemented with sugar and other things that weren’t necessarily good for you. That lead to an over-processed food supply, that lulled us into a false sense of security. That got us to go to over-indulge on frozen yogurt and wonder why our pants were getting tighter.
But … this blog? It’s more about a journey. From chubby high school sidekick to middle-age anxiety about my own mortality. The lifetime struggle to look in a mirror without negative thoughts, and attempts to try to see myself through the eyes of people that love me. Self-help books, supplements, exercise fads, quick fix attempts, doctor avoidance, etc. Love Healthy Fat is my attempt at embracing life. What I see in the mirror, on the scale, in my body. Attempting to stay grounded, make healthy decisions that support health and not futile attempts at changing my body to an idealized version of who I thought I should be. Self Love, Striving for Health, embracing what I’ve been given. Starting from there, and learning everyday. Love. Healthy. Fat.
Don’t get me wrong, I fucking love avocados. It’s true. And I’m sure I’ll talk about them occasionally throughout this journey. Recipes. Or share pictures of the perfect ones. Or art. whatever.
